Flies are commonly associated with human food preparation and storage areas and are a source of annoyance in most kitchens, restaurants and food production facilities. They are attracted to alcohol and food waste and can rapidly increase if they have access to these food sources.
Flies also feed on faeces, manure and rotting organic produce and thus contaminate food meant for human consumption by transferring bacteria from these sources on their legs and the hairs that cover their bodies. Flies liquefy their food with their saliva and then use the tongue - which is shaped like a straw - to suck up dissolved food, in the process transmitting bacteria and pathogens.
Flies can transmit diseases such as typhoid, cholera, dysentery, tuberculosis, anthrax and paralytic worms. It is therefore wise to get rid of them as soon as possible as not only do they ruin food but they also pose a serious risk to one’s health and the reputation of one’s business.
