Protecting businesses and homes in Kenya from Pests for 60+ Years
Mice are a common and persistent pest problem across Kenya, particularly in urban centres like Nairobi and agricultural areas. Their presence poses significant risks to health, food security, and property due to their ability to spread diseases, contaminate food supplies, and cause structural damage by gnawing on wires and materials. Effective mouse control in Kenya requires a combination of professional services, preventative measures, and understanding of the local species.
At Rentokil Kenya, we provide expert, safe, and effective mouse control solutions. We leverage our global expertise with over 60 years of local knowledge to ensure your property remains pest-free.
Worried about a mice infestation? Contact Rentokil today to see how we can help.
Mice pose many threats, including:
Risk Category - Impact of a Mouse Infestation
Health Risks - Mice spread dangerous pathogens through their droppings, urine, and saliva, contaminating food and surfaces.
Property Damage - Constant gnawing can destroy insulation, woodwork, and, critically, electrical wiring, posing a serious fire hazard.
Contamination - They contaminate vast amounts of food and goods, leading to financial losses for businesses and households.
Rapid Infestation - With a high breeding rate, a small problem can quickly escalate into a severe infestation within weeks

Mice and rats are persistent pests, and homeowners often have many questions about their control, biology, and the best way to achieve permanent removal. Our certified Rentokil technicians in Kenya answer your most common queries:
The most effective and permanent way to get rid of rats in Kenya is through a professional Integrated Pest Management (IPM) plan. This includes:
1. Inspection to confirm species and entry points.
2. Targeted Eradication using professional-grade, secured rodenticides and traps.
3. Exclusion (Proofing) by sealing entry points with durable, gnaw-proof materials (e.g., concrete, steel wool). DIY methods rarely eliminate the entire population.
Permanent extermination is only achieved by combining two factors:
1. Complete eradication of the existing population using professional-grade treatments, and
2. Effective exclusion (or proofing). If the entry points are not sealed (e.g., holes around pipes, damaged vents), new mice will always find their way in.
The singular "mouse" is misleading, if you see one mouse, you likely have more. To permanently solve the problem, you must implement the three key steps of professional pest control: Eradication, Proofing, and Ongoing Monitoring.
Mice are deterred by very strong, pungent odours like ammonia, peppermint oil, vinegar, or mothballs. However, this is only a temporary repellent, not a control measure. These smells fade, or mice simply find an unscented route around them. They will not drive an established infestation out of your home.
Traditional and rural methods, including those used by the Amish, typically rely heavily on physical trapping (e.g., snap traps) and meticulous structural exclusion (sealing holes with steel wool and concrete). This highlights that proofing is the non-chemical cornerstone of permanent control.
Rats (and mice) are primarily nocturnal and are most active between dusk and dawn. They prefer to operate when the environment is quiet and dark. Seeing a mouse or rat during the day is often a sign of a very heavy infestation, as competition for food has forced them to forage during daylight hours.
Mice hide in dark, secluded, and insulated areas close to food sources. Common spots include: wall cavities, suspended ceilings, insulation in attics/roof voids, behind large kitchen appliances (fridges/stoves), and under floorboards.
In the Kenyan environment, mice can be active all year round. However, you are most likely to notice them during periods of temperature change (colder nights/wetter seasons) as they actively seek warm, dry shelter and stable food sources inside buildings.
The primary signs are: droppings, gnawing marks, scratching/scurrying noises at night, a strong ammonia odour, grease marks (smudges) along walls, and evidence of nesting material.
Mice are not solely attracted to dirt. They are primarily seeking shelter, warmth, and water. Even a perfectly clean home offers warm wall cavities, dry insulation, and tiny entry points around pipes, which is all a mouse needs to establish a nest.
