Snake bites are a significant yet highly preventable medical emergency across East Africa. While a venomous strike can be terrifying, understanding how a snake bite affects the body, recognising specific clinical symptoms, and knowing exactly what first aid to apply can save lives and limbs.
At Rentokil Kenya, we believe the absolute best first aid is prevention. Our professional Snake Repellent Services and emergency pest exclusions create a secure barrier around your property, ensuring that your family, workers, or residents never have to experience the trauma of a venomous snake bite.
Most snake bites happen when a snake is cornered, provoked, or accidentally stepped on in thick brush or farm shamba land.
While a strike is highly alarming, many defensive strikes result in dry snake bites. This means the snake strikes in self defense but injects no venom at all. In other instances, a venomous snake might inject a small, non lethal dose. Because of this, professional antivenom therapy is not required for all snake bites. Medical doctors must perform a thorough clinical evaluation of a patient before deciding to administer antivenom for any snake bites.
Medically important venomous strikes in Kenya generally fall into three distinct clinical categories based on how the injected toxins affect the human body
These snake bites introduce venom that targets the central nervous system. If left untreated, the toxins rapidly block nerve signals to muscles, which can lead to complete respiratory failure. Strikes from mambas or the neurotoxic components of certain cobra bites fall into this highly time-sensitive medical category.
These snake bites destroy blood vessels and disrupt the natural clotting mechanism of the blood. This leads to persistent internal and external bleeding. While the initial strike might feel minor, the systemic internal bleeding that develops hours later is exceptionally dangerous.
Symptoms vary dramatically based on the type of venom injected. Because strikes happen in the blink of an eye, victims are not always certain they have actually suffered a venomous bite. A snake bite mark is rarely a clean pair of deep puncture wounds; it can easily look like a single puncture or a minor scratch.

Knowing what traditional remedies to avoid is just as critical as knowing correct clinical first aid measures. Misinformation can cause permanent limb damage or delay life saving medical intervention.
DO NOT cut the wound or suck out venom - Venom binds rapidly to local tissue and enters the lymphatic system. Suction cannot remove it, and cutting introduces dangerous bacteria that cause secondary infections.
DO NOT apply a tight arterial tourniquet. - Restricting blood flow entirely traps destructive cytotoxic venom in the limb, accelerating tissue death and significantly increasing the risk of amputation.
DO NOT apply ice, boiling water, lotions, or chemical potions. - These methods do not neutralize venom and often worsen localized skin damage.
DO NOT give the victim alcohol or aspirin. - Alcohol increases heart rate and speeds up venom absorption, while aspirin thins the blood and worsens haemotoxic bleeding.
DO NOT inject antivenom as an immediate field first aid measure. - Antivenom therapy must be administered intravenously by medical doctors in a hospital environment where acute allergic reactions like anaphylaxis can be managed safely.
Transport the Victim to a Hospital Immediately: - Prioritise getting the patient to the nearest medical facility equipped with an emergency trauma unit. Call ahead to notify the medical staff.
Keep the Patient Calm and Motionless: - Physical movement accelerates the spread of venom from the strike site through the lymphatic system. Lay the victim down and immobilize the bitten limb.
Remove Constrictive Items: - Immediately take off rings, bracelets, watches, tight clothing, or shoes from the affected limb before swelling begins.
Position the Limb Safely: -
Apply a Firm Pressure Bandage (Specific Bites Only): - If you are far away from medical help and suspect a neurotoxic strike from a mamba or cobra, wrap a broad bandage firmly around the entire limb to slow venom travel. Do not use pressure immobilization for cytotoxic strikes where severe localized swelling will cause extreme pressure damage.
Some cobras protect themselves not just through snake bites, but by spraying venom over a distance of three meters directly into the eyes of a perceived threat.
The most effective way to eliminate the risk of snake bites on your property is to remove the factors that attract snakes to your premises in the first place. Snakes enter commercial warehouses, industrial compounds, and residential gardens hunting for food and shelter.
